Almost unique in this field is the fact that there is no maximum duration to their policies allowing a customer to indefinitely extend their policy, and since they also allow their customers to claim online while they are still away, their level of online service is world class.

World Nomads also seem intent on helping their travellers (or any travellers actually) travel a little more easily and safely through their FREE iPod language guides which allow you to easily learn about 30 or 40 basic phrases in up to 15 languages. Smart and humourous.

We also commend them for establishing the Footprints Network a program by which their customers contribute back to the communities in which they travel, which is a somewhat surprising move for an insurance company.

I have used Travel Insurance Direct several times now when travelling overseas. The last time we travelled with another family who the airline lost their baggage. They contacted Travel Insurance Direct and found them most helpful and assisted them. All of us were greatful for their assistance which may the holiday further stress free.

I know choosing a travel insurance company was a big question for me before going to South America, so I wanted to share a positive review of World Nomads for anyone going through the same process.

Basically, some property of mine was stolen on the street in Argentina at the beginning of my trip. I filed a police report, sent the receipts, and made a claim with World Nomads and within two weeks of receiving the documents had the $500 limit for the items transferred into my bank account. It was a really easy process, efficient, and while I didn't recover the total value of the losses, something is better than nothing. Cheers to having something positive to say about an insurance company for once!

Carol & Kent - Kiwis | 30/03/2010 12:34:16 AM
World Nomads insurance has been great for us. We have been travelling for 19 months now through the Americas and have updated our insurance online twice in that time with no problems. The price is good and we had one claim (dental) that was processed with no problems. We would definitely use them again.

Vivienne | 4/02/2010 9:26:30 PM
I have just taken out my third policy with World Nomads and cannot praise them highly enough. Buying the policy online is fast and efficent and excellent value for money. I had a small claim on my first policy that was handled online quickly and professionally. I wish they covered people over the age of 66 as more older Australians are travelling and in need of the simple yet excellent policy offered by World Nomads.

The service is great: I am an Australian legally in the US, covered for work purposes, but needing cover for a short vacation - and found that US travel insurance services would not cover me, as I am not a US resident. This service seems to offer me just what I need!

JONATHAN | 4/09/2009 10:01:49 AM
ONE OF THE EASIEST TRAVEL INSURANCE TRANSACTIONS I'VE EVER MADE. DEFINITELY IMPORTANT THAT THEY OFFER POST TRAVEL PURCHASE AND EXTENSIONS. WEBSITE IS GREAT. LAYOUT, LANGUAGE, TERMINOLOGY EXCEPTIONAL!!

Kimberly Crawford | 14/08/2009 9:48:05 PM
I am a US citizen, resident of Italy. I will be 5 months pregnant when I travel to the US for one month. These two issues made it difficult finding coverage! Medical emergencies are the last thing I want to worry about while I am on vacation, and now I don't have to. World Nomads answered all my questions quickly and with all the details I needed.

Annemarie | 9/06/2009 6:05:04 AM
After much searching and stressing I have discovered that WorldNomads is one of/if not the only travel insurance provider that will insure Australians who are not currently living in Australia, or have already started there travelling. It was a great relief to finally find them, it was reasonably priced and very easy to complete online. THANKS!

Joao | 13/05/2009 11:18:09 AM
no problem with Worldnomads.com ! got some items stolen and received compensation really fast.

Travel insurance is something you take out and hope never to use, indeed dred the thought/act of using it at all... So when I was on an island resort off the sth east coast of Malaysia and was awoken at 1.30am by a stinging, biting sensation on my neck, which turned out to be a giant centipede 11cm long.... Well I was in shock, it continued to hurt/sting like hell for an hour or more and my wife, who was also scared/confused found various websites which contained conflicting info. It was Mary who suggested we call your travel insurance hotline and it was around 3am Malay time.

My experience goes as follows:

  1. * we were put straight through to a nurse who listened, and asked questions in a methodical, calm and understanding way.
  2. * His immediate advice to stay calm as there was a good chance any immediate danger period had passed. He asked what my strongest pain killer was and that it was ok to take 2. He asked if we had any antihistimine(?) Which we did so it was wise to take that and continue for around 48 hrs.
  3. * He found the insect/scoundrel on a Uni Queensland website and proceeded to provide calming expectations of what I would be feeling over the next hrs, day and couple of days etc. He was absolutely spot-on.
  4. * He asked about my last Tetinus shot of which I couldn't remember and he advised to get a shot in the next 48 hrs. I went that day to the mainland and had a shot.
  5. * Finally, he said someone would call me later that day amd wished me well.
  6. * to my surprise, someone actually called back exactly when they said they would. I was exhausted by this stage and they couldn't offer further assistance and I was by now still sore, tired swolen but mending well under competent advice.
  7. * I was then followed up several days later and I was ok by then. Shaken not stirred.

To say I was impressed with the high standard of service would be an gross understatement. For starters my holiday and that for my wife and 3 children was saved by your nurse's swift, calm and accurate advice. We continued on and had a wonderful holiday creating further memories etc.

Your follow up weeks later is 'icing on the cake' as to the service you and your team provide. Though this did not lead to a claim, so I can't speak to that process, nonetheless I am happy to provide your services the highest recommendation.

Would recommend this company to any travellers.

Had a great experience getting a quote with TID. Given that i was in early pregnancy (which was extremely healthy) i was being given the run-around and being asked to pay rediculous amounts to cover myself or not cover myself really at all. TID was a great option and the price was unbeatable!

Emma | 12/07/2010 7:58:33 PM
I have used TID many times and although I've not had to make a claim, I would still recommend it to anyone.

Mick | 15/06/2010 11:32:08 AM
We first started using Travel Insurance Direct a number of years ago because of the easy to use website and price. Two years ago my partner became ill and was hospitalised in Bali. Thanks to our policy and helpful staff we were guided thru the application process. I was very pleased with the speed of the service and very happy with the level of coverage. I have recommended TID to all of our friends based on easy to use, price , service and level of cover.

Macdesign | 12/04/2010 5:45:39 PM
TID was recommended by a friend that travels a lot. We were offered a rate by the travel agent, when booking our tickets, that was over 3 times the cost of TID. I went to their easy to use site, called their very helpful, efficient and polite service center, checked the easy to understand policy, extremely carefully, and decided that this company is well worth buying insurance from.

Matthew Flanagan | 30/03/2010 1:19:58 PM
Not a bad word to say about Travel Insurance Direct. The cover is outstanding, the price is cheap and the level of service is top notch!

On a recent trip to Europe (my first overseas experience) my Fiancee was struck down with shingles in Paris. At the time though we were unaware it was only shingles and after finding an english speaking hospital, whilst they thought it was Shingles initially, also said it could have been a lung clot so done all the relevant testing to rule it out so that we could have a relatively worry free end to our trip. Travel Insurance Direct were nothing but supportive when we called them to let them know of our misfortune and called regularly to check on my Fiancee and when it came to paying out claim, they were prompt and hassle free. It will take an extremely bad future experience with Travel Insurance Direct for me to consider going with anyone else.

bob | 23/03/2010 5:39:02 PM
I can't believe no one has anything bad to say about this company. The wording seems like its all written by the same person. something fishy going on here!

What really appealed to me, apart from the really competitive prices and the ease of generating a quote and buying a policy, was all the information they offer around travelling on the cheap. Such gems as "Travelling on the Cheap", "Sightseeing on a Shoestring" and my absolute favourite, "A Beginners Guide to Haggling" which features a You Tube clip of the famous Monty Python Life of Brian.

These guys have managed to deliver a really great value product in a relevant way. They've taken a boring product like insurance and made it fun. Plus its great that they have the backing of Lloyd's

Columbus Direct

Columbus established their reputation as probably the first online travel insurance company, providing travel Insurance direct to the public.

However, today's best web sites are fast and intuitive and allow you to get in their, do your thing and leave again as fast as possible, so we find the Columbus experience, well, rather slow and old fashioned. While the site is secure and functional, we actually found it difficult to get through the 'purchase path' to even make a purchase!

I had a case a couple of years ago to travel to asia four several months. At the time Columbus Direct was the best priced policy. While in Thailand I broke a leg and had to be hospitalised for three weeks . Their global assist staff were extremely helpful. They arranged all the hospital payments and my upgrade to fly back to Australia. Once home the claim section paid all other claims with in a couple of days. Thanks Columbus direct.

Online travel insurance from Mondial Assistance Australia is another excellent example of what really shouldn't be possible in 2008: an actual insurer who is totally clueless about the economic value of design.

WHAT is that silly little swoosh sound meant to accomplish? The calls-to-action buttons are small and hard to identify, and even when you have a quote, it isn't explained or communicated clearly. Like most insurers they just resort to presenting a complex legal document as a PDF, leaving the poor customer to work out what they are and aren't covered for.

The service offered by Online Travel Insurance are no different to those offered on the Mondial Assistance Australia and World Care web sites.

Downunder Insurance

Downunder travel insurance have been around for over a decade. We really don't know what to make of their web site ... it's simply all over the place.

The design, if you can call it that, lack cohesion, the written communication is simply terrible and their supposed comparison table is old and inaccurate. Having said that, if you look hard enough, like World Nomads they cover many adventure activities.

Well, they were going OK, until we came to test the online purchase. Then the site failed. Nothing happens. We shall review more to see if this is across all browsers. Most of the insurers here, do a pretty good job of the basic transaction, but NONE scored highly when it came to recovering from errors.
