Travel insurance. Boring huh? It is ... until you need it. Then you probably wish you'd paid closer attention to the detail.
This was a question we got asked recently and the simple answer is no, they aren't. While actual policy benefits vary considerably between companies, there are several types of cover within most policies.
From being squashed by an oversized Sumo in Japan to falling from the Rodeo in Texas, if there is one reason to buy travel insurance, this is it. Hospital costs in the USA can approach $10,000 per day, while medical evacuations to Australia can easily exceed $100,000. The cost of a travel insurance policy suddenly seems like small change, and is infinitely better than having to re-mortgage your house to bring loved ones home.
Regardless of who you buy a policy with, definitely take your time to read the policy wording carefully, particularly the exclusions, and if you have any questions, ask.
This section of a policy covers you for cancellation costs if you suddenly find you can't go on your trip for some unforeseen reason such as the serious illness of a close relative. The important thing to remember here is that for this section of the policy to be useful, you have to buy the policy when you start booking tickets and not the week before you leave.
Baggage is the reason most people take out travel insurance and is actually probably the least important component; things can be replaced, health can't. There are usually per item limits and exclusions regarding the definition of ‘reasonable care' which means a claim will be denied if you leave your baggage unattended in a public place and it's stolen. Lastly, should you have to claim, you will usually be asked for proof of ownership in some form, so you might like to consider this before you go.
If you cause an accident when abroad and injure someone, insurance can cover your liability and legal expenses but most won't pay legal expenses if you have a car accident.
When you hire a car overseas, if you have an accident there is usually a policy excess that you have to pay to the car hire company. Travel insurance can cover the costs of this.
Flight delays aren't uncommon, but very occasionally delays can run into days which can quickly become expensive. The conditions and benefits vary considerably between policies so always read the policy wording carefully.
Most travel insurance policies end the minute you arrive home, so if you have bought a policy for 3 months and come home after 2 weeks, you probably aren't entitled to a refund on the 'unused' portion.
However, some policies allow for special circumstances where if you had to return home because of a sick relative or a death in the family, then not only will you be able to claim for some of these costs, but you can also resume your journey. Again, the conditions and benefits vary considerably between policies so always read the policy wording carefully.
I have used TID before and found there webste easy to use and they covered everything that I needed for a my trip at a reasonable price. I just want good cover for a fare price. TID offer this. Very fortunately I have not yet had to claim.
I have always used the same travel insurance company. I was planning to travel to Thailand for 8days so I contacted them for a quote. I advised them that I would be 19weeks pregnant at the time of travel. They provided me with a quote which was more than I had previously paid for 6weeks in Sth America so I set about looking for a comparison quote. A friend recommended TID. Even with my "pre-existing medical condition" the quote came in at 50% less. I was impressed and will use TID for future travel
I dont get insurance anywhere else. I have used them the past 5 times I have travelled. Well priced. Good coverage. Such and easy process
have used CTI for the last 3 years, last trip had to claim on overnight medical & hospital expenses while in Bangkok, paid once we got back home & sorted out paperwork, also had to claim stolen wallet{pickpocket]in Kuala lumpur.Claimed online, sent police report & claim was promptly paid.We are using them again this year & highly recommend them but they don't cover pre existing conditions which is clearly stated on the policy.
I have used TID three times for my children and have found the prices very reasonable, the policies easy to chose and the support excellent. When my 16 year old daughter was on exchange and got sick TID were fantastic with their advice and support.
I have used TID on several occacions, three times as a normal policy and I am now onto my secdond year using the twelve month policy. Their rates are better than any I have researched and the prompt service I received when making a claim was excellent.I have recommended them to many of my friends as well as people I have met on my travels.
I found the price from TID with comparable coverage, cheaper than any other company and I will definitely use them again.
After researching several insurance policies TID had everything i needed in a policy and it was quick and simple to organise. The best part was the price....
TID is our first choice in Travel Insurance. We have used them at least 3 times now and would recommend them to anyone as the service is great and their rates are extremely comparable.
QBE Travel insurance sucksDon't do it.My infant daughter had an asthma attack while travelling overseas and needed hospital treatment overnight.QBE refuse to pay a single cent because they consider that a "pre-existing condition" - even though she's not even 2 years old yet!Choose a different insurer.
I agree with Chris, it doesn't cover much. They should call it medical expenses travel insurance to avoid confusing travellers!
i have never found buying travel insurance to be so cheap and easy. great work TID
I keep coming back to TID as they are great value and easy to work with.
I've been using TID for many years now, and have always been happy with the website, the booking system, the service, the communication and the price! When I made a claim a few years back after my laptop was damaged and some of my money was stolen, they came through with the goods, and were very communicative and cooperative.TID is the best : )Tawfik
