While theft of baggage is probably the most common and the most inconvenient, it is also probably the easiest to replace. Once back home, how quickly could you earn enough to buy a new digital camera? However, then things go wrong medically, they tend to go really wrong.

Why buy travel insurance at all?

Last year, 3.4 million Australians departed on overseas trips of less than 12 months, up from 1.1 million in 1985. On any given day, there are about 160,000 Australians in East Asia alone.

Of these, 15,882 Australians in 178 countries sought assistance from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in the financial year 2005-06, triple the number of 20 years ago.
