Credit cards. Good enough?

Some credit and charge cards offer cover comparable to regular travel insurance but others don’t. These policies work differently from normal travel insurance policies in that you’re automatically covered. However some require you to pay for all of your travel costs with your card, others part of your trip and others still may not cover domestic travel.
The Insurance Ombudsman Service (www.iecltd.com.au ) warns against the pitfalls of free travel insurance with some credit cards. A recent case saw a claim refused because the consumer paid the trip deposit in cash.
It’s important to get a copy of the policy to check the level of cover and the conditions and exclusions before you decide it’s all the cover you’ll need. There are often restrictions on the duration of travel, such as up to 30 days for travel with a one-way ticket or three months with a return ticket.
